Back to Flash Gallery Wizard101 Web Games

I was asked to port several of the minigames from Wizard101: Dueling Diego, Sorcery Stones and Doodle Dug. Each of the ports involved converting graphics to vector, reverse engineering the programming and designing new sections to fit the web game flow (title screen, help screen and reward screen). There were little pieces of new content that were added in most of the games as well. Our sound department also did a whole new sound pass on Sorcery Stones and Doodle Dug, which was very much needed. The results of the project can be seen on the site KIFreeGames.com.

Because of the cartoony nature of the character design and because I wanted the graphics to be as crisp and clear as possible, I wanted to use vector art everywhere I could. All the original art was in dds files, which couldn't be used in Flash anyways, so I converted almost everything from bitmap to vector. I'm quite happy with the results but it meant I had to really work to optimize the game programming. Vector graphics are more CPU intensive and make things much more likely to come to a complete halt on lower end machines.

I got the opportunity to add in several chunks of animation that were missing in the original game. I also added life bars and a few other effects where I could. This was the first game to be converted and one of the most fun.

This was my favorite game of the games that I ported. I worked very hard to keep it in line with the original in Wizard101. I had to make modifications to some of the effect graphics because the original used a lot of transparency with its effects. One of the downsides to vector graphics is that Flash has to do a lot more calculations for opacity changes which result in major slow down on lower end machines. This game was the most complicated of them all and, consequentially, the most difficult to program and troubleshoot.

The biggest thing that I got to add to this game was the addition of the female character. It seemed like a natural addition, especially with the way that Wizard101 does such a good job of catering to both genders. I also made it so you can identify the power ups that are actually damaging to pick up. I think this makes the game a lot more fun. The game is also much better for the sound pass that our sound team did on it.
